WHAT IS TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE?

Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, is a medicine which originated in China over 3,000 years ago.  It is believed that this medicine dates back longer than archeological evidence confirms because there were eras where book burnings took place and a lot of material was lost.  The basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine, as exemplified by the yin and yang symbol, is that is balance.

A REFLECTION OF THE UNIVERSE

Just as shells so eloquently depict, nature has an inherent ability to spontaneously link both the microcosm and macrocosm into an intricately woven pattern.  Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has acquired its wisdom from thousands of years of observing nature.  The body is viewed not as a separate entity, but as an extension of the universe, its elements, and patterns.  This profound observation served as a compass for TCM philosophy and has been responsible for evoking lasting wellness in many who received treatments.

THE BODY IS A SELF HEALING ORGANISM

It is understood that if the body, which is considered its own universe, is in harmony, then no disease (dis-ease) can occur.  The body itself is a miraculous organism and when a TCM practitioner implements treatment, his/her only job is removing obstacles (considered excess) and nourishing deficiencies so that the body itself can do its natural job of healing.  So, if compared to planting a seed; the gardener simply creates a harmonious environment for the plant to thrive (good soil, access to sunlight and water) but it is the DNA and life force of the plant itself that creates its growth in response to the balanced environment.

IT ALL STARTS WITH THE PROPER DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis is the cornerstone of TCM.  There are many patterns that can manifest as the same symptom. That is why TCM does not diagnose the symptom, but instead understands the individual pattern which causes the symptom, so that the treatment applied gets to the root of the imbalance.

TREATING THE ROOT INSTEAD OF THE SYMPTOM

TCM looks at the root cause with the understanding that the same symptom can be attributed to many root causes.  So it is essential to understand the root and remove it so that it doesn't emerge again.
